This is if you get a hat you don't like!
How make "move" a hat
Required knowledge: How to install a skin
What I will teach you: How to make a TF2 hat work for another hat slot
Why will I teach you? Because some modelers don't do this so you end up with a lot people going "omg compil dis 4 this and that hat" This is to avoid that, and cut some modelers a little slack
Programs you will need: GCFScape It's free!
Small explanation: You can skip the brackets [ ] I only use them to tell why I do that
Download and install GCFScape.
Here's what we will do, we will take my "Arrow through head hat" and make it replace the halo.
Now download that and you'll see that the zip has only a model folder. That is totally ok. [It's because when doing this, we don't have to mess with the materials]
Now open GCFScape. What you see might confuse you, but I'll take you through the parts we need.
Click on "File" then "Open" if it doesn't take you directly to your steamapps folder, then find it yourself.
Now in your steamapps folder, you see alot of files called "Team Fortress 2 blablablabla.GCF" I want you to open the one called "Team Fortress 2 content.gcf"
Here you see alot of folders, we will be working with a simple model, just go into the "tf" folder, then "models" then you click yourself into "player" , then "items" and lastly "allclass" If you know how to navigate GCFScape, get to this path: tf/models/player/items/allclass
There'll see some files called "allhalo.vvd", allhalo.mdl, "allhalo.dx90.vtx", "allhalo.dx80.vtx" and "all_halo.sw.vtx" These are the filenames we want. [For some reason the Halos doesn't have a .phy, I don't know why]
Go back to the folder with the spy hat you downloaded. Now you are going to rename every file there, the quickest way to not mess up the files in to only switch "spyhat" with "allhalo" in the filename. Keep the file extension from the first punctuation mark.
Now all the files should be named "allhalo.blablabla", that's good. Now go to your steamapps folder again. Navigate to "steamapps/common/team fortress 2/tf/models/player/items" If the path doesn't exist, create it. (You know, right click "New" -> "Folder" rename it to the folder you're missing) Now you will create a folder called "allclass"
Now move all your renamed files into the new "all_class" folder.
Now ingame whenever you see a halo, it will be an arrow through the players head.
There are some limits to this technique: For best results, only do this with hats designed for that class, don't download a engineer hat skin and expect it to look good on the Pyro
Here's a full list of the limits I know of:
All hatless "hats" [It won't work as this is done another entirely different way]
Scout: You can convert from regular 2Batter's Helmet" to the new models. But not the other way, because the old helmet still has the scout wearing his cap under it. Bakerboy to Bonk Helmet will work Bonk Helmet to Baker boy will work Baseball Bills Sport shine will NOT work[Done with something called bodygroups I suspect]
Soldier: From Stash to new helmets, not possible the other way due to the soldier still wearing this helmet underneath [The results may vary on this one, due to some replacements being made to fit on his old helmet] Pot to tyrant's helm will work Tyrant's helm to pot will work
Pyro: This class have no limits so every combination with other pyro hats will fit.
Demoman: This class have no limits so every combination with other Demo hats will fit.
Heavy Weapons Guy: This class have no limits so every combination with other heavy hats will fit.
Engineer: Mining Light to others will work. But not the other way, because the old helmet still has the Engy wearing his helmet under it. Train cap to Cowboy hat will work Cowboy hat to Train cap will work Texas Slim Shine dome will NOT work [Done with something called bodygroups I suspect]
Medic: This class have no limits so every combination with other Medic hats will fit.
Sniper: From tooth belt to other will work, but it has it's limits due to some replacements being made to fit on his original hat Jarate Belt to Panama will work Panama to Jarate Belt will work Ritzy Rick Har fixative will NOT work [Done with something called bodygroups I suspect]
Spy: This class have no limits so every combination with other Spy hats will fit.
