How to make a default skin decent in 3 steps!

Okay, so you like the idea of Valve's skin for something, but you don't like all the low quality things? Here's something to help you, and it's perfect for beginners!

You will need:

Pre Steps: Import the VTF file of your weapon/whatever into Paint.NET... I won't get into this as their are many tutorials, but this may be helpful.

NOTES (The main instructions will be in the pictures!)

  • Every weapon is different. Don't have the, "I will make this slider ELEVEN every time!" type attitude, because then something may not look great along the road.

  • Experiment! Whether it be with different effects or sizes or adjustments, don't be afraid to try something new as there always will be a back button.

  • Got a plugin similar to Sharpen+ for Photoshop/GIMP? Please tell me and I will put it up in the tutorial for those who use other programs.

  • Paint.NET and its plugins are always free! It is often considered the "Poor man's Photoshop", but I find it quite useful for what I do.

If I have taken anything out of this, its that advanced sharpen tool. I may now have a way to save all the good images that had to be saved as a .jpg by the creator.

But where are we supposed to put all those .dll's?

I need help with something, whenever I open a VTF with Paint.NET (thought I'd give it a try), I see a shitload of transparency and barely any textures visible.. Tried filling the background with black, but still, the wood (e.g) is barely visible.

You need to open it up in VTF edit and copy it into Paint.NET.

What I do is I open the image in both programs, and I copy and paste the one from VTFEdit onto the one in paint.NET on the same layer.

That worked, thanks :D Made a skin for the heatmaker. Check it out.

at the second image you mean 2048px not 2000 square as valve texture file's require the texture's to be in a power of 2 resolution!
