Weird screen problem

help

By Teh Frohwner 9 months ago

So, I was casually playing TF2 when the game suddenly freezed, it continued in that state for about 45 seconds and then the screen lost the video signal from the PC, I waited about half a minute before I decided to force-reboot it. Has anyone of you experienced a similar error before?

When was the last time you cleaned your computer?

Is this a one time error or is it happening regularly?

You did not specify your computer specs/video card. TF2 (and the Source engine in general) is not very demanding on new computer systems, so I highly doubt it's stressing your PC to freeze.

It could be an issue of dated/corrupt video driver, dust build up in your PC case/laptop (overheating) or a wrong setting in your video driver settings.

I suggest you first make sure your PC is clean (open the case and remove any dust build-ups from fans/heat sinks/connectors), then make sure you are using the latest video driver for your card and update if necessary.

Nvidia cards (GTX 200s and up) had some issues with recent driver updates where cases similar to yours occurred. It also happened to me with Counter-Strike Source where the screen would turn black and I lose signal from the video card. Sometimes CTRL-ALT-DEL would work and I was able to terminate the game, while other times, the signal was completely lost and I had to perform a hard reset.

The fix was to set the "power management mode" to "prefer maximum performance" in your nvidia control panel (right click on your desktop, then choose 'manage 3D settings'-->global settings, and modify the above mentioned setting).

This prevented the card from losing signal while opening some Direct 3D games.

    Hope this helps

My current rig is an old Athlon X2 7750 AND A GeForce 9600GSO with the latest drivers, I just dusted them about a month and a half ago. It's also the first time that error occurs just before I played Deus Ex HR without any kind of problems, anyways, I'll set the power settings to maximum performance to see if I can avoid the signal loss again, thanks for the tip.

just a small thing, one of my MoBo's RAM slot failed about half a year ago, don't know if that could be related.

I think that your problem may be a overheat. I would try cleaning your PC out or something to that effect.

It isn't the CPU idles at 32 ºC and on heavy load reaches about 37º, the GPU ranges from 61º to 71º which isn't a really high temp to cause a failure.
