Generally, I play engineer on Gravelpit (due to the many exploits). My usual tactic is to rush to B and sentry-jump myself onto the roof. Building a teleporter here will allow your team to easily defend B, and any half-decent team should be able to defend it (although I must admit that almost no pub servers have half-decent teams). If we end up loosing both A and B, I build a teleporter on top of C roof (as is highlighted in this image), and block both doorways just below it with my dispenser and sentry-gun. If my team can't hold C at this point, there's practically nothing you can do.

Really I'd say it depends on a lot of factors...Skill level, communication, number of players, what classes, competitive/pub etc

If there are around 6 or so players per team, I think a good defense tends to be have an engy and a pyro on B, with another couple of players there, and have a couple of players holding the enemy off A for a bit.

I rarely see anyone even attempt to defend A, unless it's a large server with several engies at each point, people just see B as being much easier to defend, and it tends to be really (possibly becuase nobody helps defend A)
