The source model viewer that comes with the SDK sucks big time, I REALLY need something better to make renders with.

Any suggestions? I can't get blender to work on my Vista laptop, so that's ruled out.

3DStudio max 6-2009. :) The ultimate render engine lies within the skills you have, and 3dsmax.

Also then you could try Pov-Ray, its free, but tricky. you have to learn some code to use it... :(

I actually have 3dsMax 6... but it's the same deal with blender: my cursed Vista Laptop won't run the software. I get loads of errors and it ultimately just doesn't work.

I actually found my copy of 6 at the dump... big box with literature and everything. I got it to work once, I think, on my old computer.

A friend of mine has 9, I think. I'll ask him about it.

In the meantime, are there any free rendering programs out there?

I tried my friend's 3dsmax and I have a new appreciation for the simplicity of the SDK model viewer.

Setting the VTF up to be anisotropic and mipmapless makes it look fine in the model viewer, so problem solved I guess.

Download the free trial of 3dsMax 8 or 9 and just do your renders in that. It's free, legal and your renders will look super. Under the right settings that is ;D

I can't figure it out though. It's extremely complicated, and I don't know anything about the program. I'm used to Gmax, which is in a way hurting me because I think I know what I'm doing in 3dsmax but it's completely off.

Are there any good tutorials for beginners on how to set up a render in 3dsmax 9?
