Complete Phongless Pack [UPDATED JUNE 9TH, 2013]

A complete set of VMT files with the "$phong" setting set to 0 to completely disable phong. No more shininess!

SteamPipe-Compatible Submission This submission is SteamPipe-compatible, and as such, comes in the new .VPK format.
A Note From Cheppa November 4th, 2012 Because of loss of interest to TF2 and personal issues, 404: User Not Found will be taking over in updating this pack. I had fun updating it from the start and the amount of attention this has gained is astounding. Thanks to all.

Latest Update & Changes June 9th, 2013 The pack has been updated to include all the VMT files from every update since the last update, which includes the Robotic Boogaloo pack. I may have missed something, but it seems like the only new VMTs are for hats/misc items. Let me know if there's something I've missed!
Installation Instructions The pack itself includes a README file. The same text from that README file is the same text you'll read below.

To install the Complete Phongless Pack:

1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom

2. Select the .VPK file, and drag it into the "custom" folder.

And you're good to go!

Posted by TheNoobThatWas This looks really good, but I suggest you change your picture to remove the "Australian Christmas update", it made me think this was old and outdated even though it isn't.

This pack is outdated and dead. Use the new mat_phong 0/1 command.

    • Update??

This pack is obsolete, Valve added a mat_phong command.

They did, but they didn't know about certain props being lighting-borked when Phong is removed.

Best example of this is to use mat_phong 0, and hit up that MvM map with the museum in the spawn room. Almost every prop will be pitch black. I've tried messing with the VMTs for the props to make them light up properly, but no go.

As well, the upgrade station, without phong, has a weird mesh-like shadow thing all over it when phong is removed.

So once I'm not so busy with my DarkRP server, I'll convert this pack into a mat_phong fix pack, which will basically be VMTs with phong set to "1", to override mat_phong, and fix those lighting issues. As well, I may as well remove envmap lines on anything with glass/shininess, because I hate the shininess when using no phong. I'll do the envmap stuff in a separate pack which will be included with this.

Posted by Shadik I like this a lot. Feels more fitting to the game than the vanilla lighting.

That's why Valve added mat_phong which does the same thing this pack does, except mat_phong doesn't remove phong on things like when you're ubered, where this pack does remove phong on uber.

I've been meaning to trash this pack because of mat_phong, just never got around to it.

Don't trash this. It has advantages over the command.

Yeah I actually re-thought the decision and I figure I can convert this into a "mat_phong Fix Pack".

It wouldn't be as big and bulky in file number as the current phongless pack. It'd basically just contain fixes for things like the MvM map props going pitch black without phong, and the removal of "$envmap" variables on any weapons/hats/misc items that have them (basically anything with a "glass" texture) because on certain custom maps the lighting goes all weird and silvery when $envmap is present.

I'll probably start work on it and do some testing pretty soon, just to see how to make the command ignore any VMT files with certain variables.

As someone who thinks like this on a regular basis, maybe you could keep this as-is for historical purposes. (I'm a history freak, what can I say.)

Hmmm, yeah. I guess I'll do the mat_phong fix pack as a separate submission.

    Self-loathing moron.
