The Spit Fire

Show them you have teeth and arn't afraid to bite!

Want to strike fear in the sorry maggots facing you on the battlefield? Your shiny new Direct Hit rocket launcher not cutting the mustard? Well give it a fresh coat of paint and give it some TEETH that will launch fiery death to the poor mortal on the other end of your rocket: THE SPIT FIRE.

Just drop the "cdirecthit" file in your tf/materials/models/weapons/citems folder and jump into the fray with your freshly decorated best friend, one that blows things up!

Update: Cut the file size to 4mb instead of 5.33mb. Any more compression I think and the details get muddy.

Has this been updated since the day the DH came out? I have it from then and the teeth are really pixellated on max settings 19201080 8 AA

Wow, it's really original, but sadly the scope doesn't match anymore.

I've got a slight problem going on, using this skin has somehow made my soldier shadowless and I keep getting random spatterings of shadow on the floor, usually in square patterns.

Pros: The green texture on the side is a neat departure from the standard Soldier rockets. I'm pleased to see that you didn't make every part of it a solid green, leaving a bit of detail in the wake of the reskin. It is very unique, and fits the Soldier's 'Pro-American', 'Gung-Ho' mentality with the teeth.

Cons: The skin is too clean - the green looks too solid, and pristine, and the teeth decal is way too bright. There is little to no shading or shadowing on the Direct Hit's body, making it look like it is fullbright with phong mapping.

In a related note, there is no shading underneath the edges of the scope's mount, either, making it look unnatural.

Improvements: The skin could be roughed up some more. This DH looks like it came straight out of a box, brand new, especially with the teeth decal, and these details make the weapon too bright. These key factors divert the eyes to the weapon more than the combat.

Also, you may want darken the areas near where peripherals attach to the gun - the scope, the grip - and near the bottom of it in general, to fix the issue of the unnatural shading.

Notes: This is a decent unlock reskin, and impressive by design. With a bit of work and modification, it can be substantially improved.

Posted by funsize Is it possible to make the scope add on invisible with transparency? If so I will download this.
The thought crossed my mind but I don't think there's a way to "cloak" part of the physical model. That may be up to using 3D software possibly and as of now that's somewhat out of my league. If anyone knows, please tell me! Also, I thought about being silly and just put a large crack in the lense of the eyepiece, just to give it a reason to be useless.
Here is a tutorial for CS:S but i am sure it will work for tf2, I have seen it done with player helmets before the hats were released. http://www.fpsbanana.com/tuts/3105

When I got home and looked into it and did find a way and actually pulled it off with some black magic. Unfortunately I haven't figured out how to use both the $alphatest (which enables to mask out parts of the model) and the $phong (which enables reflictions on the model) in the same VMT so it's one or the other. hopefully I'll figure it out, though personally I like it better with the scope on.

I like fire, lots of fire.

I forgot to write what I hink about this skin, so here I go:

PROS: Many WWII planes had this type of painting on it, I mean the sharkmouth and the flag so it fits teh Soldier really good. Also, you really know how to make it look detailed. No pixels on the skin.

CONS: The colour of the lense.

IMPROVEMENTS: Add a crosshair on the lense maybe?

NOTES: Keep it up. ; )

If you need help with sounds,

DevNotes

First weapon skin and nothing too radical. But I felt the teeth decals found on fighter jets had some place in being with the soldier's arsenal.

Also, I apologize for not having better shots. I made this skin before actually unlocking it.
